As adapted from a recent neighborhood watch communication...
U.S. Census Bureau workers are fanning out across the St. Louis region as part of a nationwide canvas to verify addresses. Residents may be unfamiliar with the address verification process ahead of sending out questionnaires because this is the first time workers will verify addresses directly with residents.
Unfortunately this also means unscrupulous individuals may use this opportunity to take advantage of people by posing as Census workers.
The Census Bureau encourages residents to verify someone at their door is indeed a Census Bureau employee. True representatives can provide a photo ID with their name, a Commerce Department watermark and an expiration date. Employees will also carry an official bag with a Census Bureau logo or laptop. If you still have questions about someone's identity you can call 800-923-8282 to speak with a local Census Bureau representative. Do not invite or allow anyone into your home.
By April 1, 2020 all homes will receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census. The best way to avoid a follow-up visit is to fill out the questionnaire as soon as you receive your invitation. U.S. residents are required by law to complete the 2020 Census.
